Founded in 1936, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) now has more than 18,000
members worldwide representing the entire spectrum of land use and real
estate development disciplines, working in private enterprise and public
service.

The National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) is
the national trade association for REITs and publicly traded real estate
companies. Members are real estate investment trusts (REITs) and other
businesses that own, operate and finance income-producing real estate,
as well as those firms and individuals who advise, study and service
these businesses.
- NAA
The National Apartment Association is a federation of 160 state and
local affiliates, comprised of more than 30,000 multifamily housing
companies representing more than 4.6 million apartment homes throughout
the United States and Canada.
- NCREIF
The National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries (NCREIF)
is an association of institutional real estate professionals who share
a common interest in their industry.
- AFIRE
The Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE) is the only
not-for-profit association for the foreign real estate investment community.
Through an exclusive membership of international investors from 17 countries,
AFIRE provides an exclusive forum for investors to meet and exchange
information through regularly scheduled meetings in the United States
and Europe.

Competitions
- National
Real Estate Finance Challenge
The National Real Estate Challenge is a case-based real estate competition
between leading business/real estate schools around the country hosted
by the University of Texas at Austin. Sponsors of the competition have
included such firms as Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Jones Lang LaSalle,
and Trammel Crow. The HBS team took first place in the competition in
2005.
- Urban
Land Institute / Gerald D. Hines Urban Design Competition
The Gerald D. Hines ULI Urban Design Competition brings together interdisciplinary
teams of students in business, real estate development, architecture,
urban planning, historic preservation, engineering, and law to work
on a development plan for a selected parcel.
- FHLB
Boston Affordable Housing Development Competition
Sponsored by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, the Affordable Housing
Development Competition brings together interdisciplinary teams of students
from schools in the Boston area to work with community developers and
professional architects to develop an affordable housing proposal. HBS
students were members of the first place teams in 2005 and 2006.

Library Research Guide
This guide supports HBS courses taught within the real estate industry.
Topic areas include construction, environment, finance, international
law, and property types. Each section includes associations, books,
directories, glossaries, journals and Web Sites. The full list is a
complete view of all resources. The majority of the resources are available
to all users of this guide with the exception of several databases accessible
only to HBS students, faculty and staff.
